SVIRSKI, ALEXEY IVANOVICH

SVIRSKI, ALEXEY IVANOVICH (1865–1942), author. After a nomadic youth, Svirski turned to literature, one of his early works being Rostovskiye trushchoby ("Slums of Rostov," 1893). Two of his best-known books were Ryzhik, priklyucheniya brodyago ("Ryzhik, the Adventures of a Vagrant," 1912), a popular children's story, and the autobiographical Istoriya moyey zhizni ("Story of My Life," 1930, 19473). V Cherte ("In the Pale") and Yevrei ("Jews," 1934) were collected short stories about Jews.
